October 27-30
Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday evenings this week with NO SCHOOL on Friday. I sent conference reminders home with students.
MATH
This week we are finishing chapter 5. Students should be able to tell you the mean, median, mode, and range of a set of data. We are also using graphs as a problem solving strategy (lesson 5.4) and analyzing graphs in lesson 5.5. Our next test will cover chapters 5 and 6.
WORD STUDY
Students are taking notes on sets of Core Words as we learn about letter patterns, word form, and ways of using these high frequency words. After students take notes on a set of five words, we practice using these words by doing sentence dictation and a cloze passage (a passage where words are missing and must be supplied). Students are allowed to use notes to proofread work. We will also get another set of Word Origin words this week from the Latin root “manu-” which means “hand.”
iTIME
We continue to read about government and the upcoming election. We are working on skills used in reading non-fiction such as:
–Highlight answers to questions regarding details
–Use a table, chart, or graph to get information
–Pay attention to sub-headings to locate important information
