SPRING BREAK!!! Enjoy

Students had an opportunity to earn some BONUS points on Monday (the 23rd) as they put geometric nets together.    When we return we have 2 weeks before MAP testing so we will be hitting it hard and heavy!!

March 16-20

March 18th, 2009

Math–

Monday–Introduce and begin working on types of polygons and classification of each. Learn the difference between regular and irregular polygons.

Tuesday–continue classification of polygons and learn to identify similar and congruent figures.

Wednesday–Learn about different types of symmetry.

Thursday-Friday– Learn about transformations of figures and complete notetaking and practice packets.

Word Study

On Monday, students received a list of words. We will be working on these spelling words this week and have a test on Friday.

School WILL be in session on Monday, March 23 as a snow make-up day. The rest of the week will be Spring Break!

Math

The Flip Books were due on Monday. We began an introduction to Geometry and will be working on lines and angles (text 428-433) this week. Students will receive a note-taking packet and a practice packet that we will be working in for the next couple of weeks over geometry concepts.

Word Study

We continue to work on Core Words as well as build vocabulary with our study of word origins. Our next Word Origin test will cover aqua- hydra-,  mob- mot-, and cap- words. Students have notes on the fifteen words in their spiral notebooks. The test will be Thursday or Friday of this week.

i-TIME

Students will have another day or two to read sports books. They will be writing questions based on their reading. We will practice writing questions that are “right there” in the text as well as questions that they come up with “in my head.” Questioning is an important strategy to increase comprehension.

March 2-6

MATH

Continue working on flip book, Key concepts: factors, Greatest Common Factors, Multiples, Least Common Multiples, Prime Factorization, Divisibility Rules.

WORD STUDY

Learn new Latin/Greek roots, mob- or mot-  meaning move

Take notes on next five core words and practice them doing Dictation.

i-TIME

Read article and do comprehension activities. Read books about sports.

 

February 23-27

Math

This week we are working on patterning, reading and completing function tables, and practicing properties of Multiplication. We are making a flip book of  “hints” that will be turned in when complete for 100 points. We are working on the flip book during class. Students have been practicing patterning with a packet of problems similar to those on the MAP test. The patterning packet is due on Wednesday.

Word Study

Students received a list of words to study this week for a “Bubble test” on Friday. On this test, they will look at four spellings and have to pick out the one that is correct. We will be practicing the words throughout the week.

i-TIME

We have just completed a Scholastic News Reading Test of Comprehension. Students are also working on skills using a graphic organizer to organize their ideas and write a good summary. Their summaries must include details from their reading.

February 9-13

Valentines Party–Friday 3:00 p.m.     Please send in $2 to help with the cost of treats for the party. Students may bring valentines to exchange.  We will have bags to hold valentines and take them home.

MATH

We are beginning our unit on Hands On Algebra. Students will be using manipulatives all week to practice solving algebraic equations. There should not be homework–We will work together in class.

Word Study

We are working on a list of words to participate in a local spelling bee. On Friday, we will hold a homeroom spelling bee.

i-TIME

We have used a strategy called “Anticipation” guides to help students focus on comprehension as they read. They must decide their opinion about several topics prior to reading, then read to confirm or disprove a statement they have read.  Below are partners reading from Scholastic News to see how accurate they were in their predictions.

DARE Graduation

February 5th, 2009

The graduation for the students on the Green Team has been scheduled for Tuesday evening, February 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the gym.

February 2-6

February 2nd, 2009

Math Test on Friday!  We are finishing our unit on division this week and will be practicing division for the test. On Monday we graded the homework from page 213 in the Math book. Several students did not do the checking (multiply the divisor by the quotient and add the remainder). We also began working on a division practice from lesson 10.3 in our book. We will continue this practice on Tuesday in class–no homework. On Wednesday we will practice doing division with a decimal in the dividend and finish up the chapter by looking at estimates to determine if they are reasonable. Thursday we will have DARE during 3rd block. Friday is our test.

Word Study 

Students received a list of 20 words on Monday to review before a test on Friday to identify the correct spelling of these words. We worked a puzzle. Most students finished in class and turned their puzzle in today.

The Vocabulary test will be next Monday (Feb. 9) It will cover word origin words from the geo- terr- (meaning earth), astr- stell- (meaning star), and chron-temp- (meaning time). Students should have definitions in their spirals for the 15 new words:

Math

We are continuing to work on long division in preparation for a division test next week. The test will cover one- and two-digit division. It will include some questions that require estimation of reasonable quotients. We are doing a lot of practice in class!

Word Study

Students continue to work on High Frequency (Core Words) as well as developing vocabulary and dictionary skills. Students will learn several new vocabulary words that come from the Latin/Greek roots “chron-” or “temp” meaning “time” We will have a word study test over the last 15 vocabulary words next week.

i-TIME

We are continuing our reading from a book about President Obama. Students are practicing skills to improve comprehension.

1st Semester Honors Assembly

January 24th, 2009

The fifth grade student who had perfect attendance and those who made the 1st semester Honor Roll will be recognized at an assembly on Friday, Jan. 30 in the Gym at Willard Intermediate. Parents are invited to attend.
